Butterfly Spring Wreath

Butterfly Spring Wreath

A house’s front door is the sort of the mouth of the house. It’s either smiling or glowering at people. Some people’s front porches around here make me want to knock on the door and ask to pay a quarter to see the rest of the house. I’m kind of noisy like that. When I see blooming wreaths, old benches topped and fluffed with cheery shades of yellow and green, rusty antiques artfully displayed in flower beds, and window boxes exploding with flowers…I just know if the outside is that good, the inside has got be amazing. My front door, well, let’s just say, it is sort of like the fourteen year old tom-girl who just discovered lipstick and curling irons. You can tell she’s trying, and you feel like patting her on the back just to encourage her. You sort of want to tell her she’ll be a lady … Continue reading

The Master Bedroom Challenge

DSCF2834

Meet my newest project. She’s a real beauty, don’t you think? This is master bedroom in all it’s pink and wood glory. This room has some great potential. For starters, behind that open closet door, there’s the cutest little dresser built into the wall. Then there’s the wood floor, which is going to look as gorgeous as my hallway floor when it’s all said and done. And, I think the slope-y, cottage sort of shape to the room is charming. That said…To say I am lacking enthusiasm to do this room is an understatement.  It needs to be done. I know I’ll love it when it is done. But, oh me. I’ve about had it with painting wood walls. Nothing to do about that but just go for it, right? So here’s my plan. White walls, refinish the floor, and paint some sort of cool, calming color on the ceiling. … Continue reading

Give a sister a leg up

silhouette-tasting-graphicsfairy007bg

Every now and then, I’ll take my two favorite little people to some sort of chicken nugget/ indoor play place providing establishment for a lunch out. The chance to eat their favorite food and to climb like monkeys with other kids is pretty much all two little girls need to make them deliriously happy. Who am I kidding? Skipping out on the lunch mess and the few moments of peace and quiet on the opposite side of the sound proof glass, with only the occasional wave or thumbs up required, makes me deliriously happy too! Sitting there idly scrolling through my phone, I watched little sister furiously pumping her chubby little legs, madly trying to shove herself up the ladder which was made for slightly taller children. Big sister came careening around the corner to her rescue. With a massive bear hug, much tugging, and a mighty heave she managed … Continue reading

Easing into Spring

DSCF0592

I have the most baffling problem, I am still sweeping up pine needles when I sweep my floors! Honestly, I think the floor is growing them to taunt me. It’s not like I haven’t ever cleaned since Christmas…the amount of sweeping and mopping that goes on this house is ridiculous. So why, why am I still finding pine needles?!! Seriously, I think it’s time we moved on to more respectable variety of Christmas tree next year. As in, the fake kind that doesn’t shed for two months post removal. This rant has a point by the way. The point is. I’m finally moving past my post-Christmas fit of non-decorating.  I always turn into a minimalist after the Christmas season. I like clean surfaces, and the least amount of clutter I can reasonably enforce without making everyone around me miserable. But, hey! It’s almost Spring! It’s time to think green, and … Continue reading

Scrap wood picture frame

DSCF0569

Picture frame making wasn’t really on my agenda for the day. I was minding my own business mopping floors, when I noticed how dusty my piano looked…naturally, the picture above the piano then caught my attention…and it’s horrid frame which has been bugging me for weeks…and well, you know, you can’t walk on floors when they are wet anyway. It only makes sense to step outside and make a picture frame while they are drying. Wouldn’t you agree? This was the frame that was bothering me tremendously. Ever since I preformed mod-podge magic on it to make it look like a painting, I’ve been itching to do something about the frame. Hanging on to every ratty piece of scrap wood I can get my hands on does have it’s advantages sometimes…namely when random desires for decor I can’t afford strikes. (Just in case you wondering, I’m not in the habit … Continue reading

How to find love

vday

Is there any better feeling than knowing you are loved and wanted by someone? Valentine’s day was two days ago, and to some that may mean a chocolate induced coma, or a vase of roses, or a card, or a date night…and to some that may mean nothing at all. To be loved by another person is a wonderful thing, but even then, that wonderful love is marred. By us, the human…the failure and disappointment that every single human being will bring to another at some point, simply because we are imperfect beings. That’s why the love of another human will never fully complete us. Our hearts were made to need a love stronger than any that we can find in life, it is made to need the love of our Heavenly Father.  They say that love is the universal language, do you suppose that that is some sort of … Continue reading

Snap Shot Thursday

instagram 3

Was your day full of thrill and excitement? Given my druthers, I would never have exited my bed and spent the day bonding with a book and my pj’s. It seems though, there are three other people who live here who, very strangely, seem to expect three meals a day and their laundry done…all in all though, the day was very much  worth seeing after all… Even a house desperately in need of a power washing, paint, and some major green thumb assistance looks pretty dressed in white. Maybe someone from HGTV’s yard crashers will see this picture and come do something about my yard for me. My three little puff ball bushes are looking a tad sad. That’s ice by the way, not snow. Does anybody besides me think that’s weird? I’ve never seen ice rain before, and I’m not sure I approve of it. What does one do … Continue reading

Adventures in refinishing a wood floor

DSCF0527

As I mentioned in my last post, I had a date this weekend with my hallway floor. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to it, but as it turns out, refinishing a floor isn’t half as painful as I imagined! Of course, I did manage to break just about every rule there is for refinishing floors…big surprise there. If this house has taught me anything, it’s that there is more than one way to skin a cat (not that you would actually want to skin a cat. eew!).  I had thought that the varnish had just worn off this floor over time, but a closer inspection proved otherwise. There is tons of tack marks, nails along the perimeter, a tuft of red carpet here and there, and scatter marks from a drum sander. They must have had carpet down at some point, and then removed it and sanded the floor. That’s … Continue reading

The experienced people’s take on refinishing floors

hallway

This post could also be titled, “The pep talk to myself to stop being scared of floors and just do them already!” As you know, we’ve been working on the upstairs hallway. I finished painting the walls (three doors painted, three still to go). And now I’ve decided to tackle the floor up there. The upstairs floors are all original wood floors, I think pine? I’m no wood expert, but since the rest of the house is bedecked in every direction with pine, that would make sense if that’s what the floor is as well. They are completely worn down to the raw wood, no varnish left on them at all…so I’m thinking it will be a fairly easy process to re-stain and seal them. Unfortunately, we know all to well just how well my over optimistic thinking process works out for me…that’s why I’m hesitating. I haven’t quite forgotten … Continue reading

A Step in the Right Direction – The Great Staircase Transformation

DSCF0464

The next time I open my big mouth and say that some such painting project will be quick and easy…someone, please, be a dear and kick me. Why I thought painting a million billion skinny spindles and keeping my kids dirty feet off stairs long enough for paint to dry was going to be easy or fast is quite beyond me. Although the actual work time was a tad disappointing (hmmm or down right depressing as the case may be), the outcome was anything but that! They turned out exactly how I wanted! I’m pretty much in love in with them. If you happened to read my original post about these stairs, you might have noticed I actually didn’t stick to my plan for this project. I was going to do something on the risers, like wood appliques or something along those lines to fancy them up a tad. I … Continue reading
